I'm looking for some volunteers who can make one or more blocks.
My husband has a coworker whose house was destroyed by the gas line explosion in San Bruno last year. (www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/09/12/san-bruno-explosion-pho...) He had just arrived home when the explosion happened right in front of his house and he had to flee. His wife was mere moments from home and would have been killed if she was just a little bit earlier. Their house was annihilated, the car in the driveway destroyed, and their pets never recovered. All of their wedding photos, clothes, everything, was gone.
Then this morning on the way into work, his car was T-boned by another car who ran a red light, and he is currently in the hospital. He and his wife are expecting their first child in December.
I would like to make him and his family a quilt to provide some comfort. I know if it is just me, it will take a long time for this quilt to be finished, so I was hoping maybe some folks might be willing to donate one or more blocks. I'd like to make a quilt inspired by this quilt:
using this color palette:
along with grays and a white background, using modern, masculine fabrics.
If you are interested in helping out, please leave a comment below or email me at krw1243@gmail.com, and I will send you a mail with instructions.
I'd like to get this together as soon as possible, so I'm hoping to have all the blocks here two weeks from now to ensure there is enough time for it to be finished before the baby arrives.

P.S. Don't have time to make a block? Fabric and scraps in the above colors would also be most welcome. Or perhaps take a few minutes to help spread the word. Anything and everything helps!!

I could make a block for you...
ReplyDeleteI will make a block.. send me instructions! I remember that explosion on the news. We are in the central valley, a little over an hour away, and have extended family in the bay area.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to make a block or two. I live in the Bay Area, so this hits close to home.
ReplyDeleteDo you have directions for the block and how many blocks are you looking to receive? You can count me in. Also, what is your timeline?
ReplyDeleteHi Mama Spark,
ReplyDeleteI do have directions - I've included the email I sent to all of the other volunteers below. My ideal initial timeline was to have the block within two weeks, which is about 1.5 weeks from now, but if people need more time, I'd rather extend the timeline than lose help. The biggest thing is just I want to finish the quilt before December, and I need some time to assemble the blocks and quilt and bind it.
Hi folks,
First of all, I really want to thank you all so much for volunteering to help out. This means a lot to me and my husband, and hopefully to the family this quilt is going to.
The nitty gritty details:
As a reminder, I'd like to make a quilt inspired by this quilt:

using this color palette:

Plus grays (ash, coal, charcoal, etc.) and please use true white for the
background (not an off-white like Kona Snow). The general vibe is modern
and masculine, so please no kids prints or super girly prints. It is for a
grown man (and his family) after all. :)
Elizabeth Hartman of Oh, Fransson! has a lovely free tutorial on mosaic
blocks here:

I'd like the blocks to be 12.5" square (so it will be 12" once I sew them
all together). If they are larger than 12.5" when done, you don't need to
trim them down, I can trim them once they are all together and I will add
the narrow sashing to go between the blocks.
Here is my address to send your block(s) to:
Kelsey Prantis

Mountain View, CA 94040
I'm hoping to get it to him as soon as possible, so the sooner the better.
Hopefully I can get all the blocks here in about 2 weeks. If that timeline
is too tight, please let me know. I'd rather extend the timeline than lose
help. :)
If you'd like to include an index card with a little message of
encouragement or information about yourself as a contributor, I'm sure
that'd be that much more special for them. :)
Thank you again for your help. I can't even being to put into words how
much I appreciate it. The generosity of the quilting community never ceased
to amaze me. :)

I can make a block
ReplyDeleteI'd like to help. Do you still need? Can you send instructions?
ReplyDeleteI might be able to make a block, otherwise I can definitely send you some blue and orange scraps. What size finished blocks are you looking for?
ReplyDeleteHi Kelsey. I made a block today and am sending it to you along with some scrap fabric. How many quilters have agreed to help out? Thanks for providing me with an opportunity to help this family!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! When I first sent out the email I had 13 volunteers, but some additional folks have joined, so now we are up to 22! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for all of your help!
Kelsey
Any updates on this project Kelsey? Your little guy is ADORABLE, by the way!
ReplyDeleteYup! The blocks have been pouring in; I'm planning on starting assembly on the days I have off for Thanksgiving if I have enough. Otherwise I will use those days to make more blocks and then begin assembly. :)
ReplyDeleteOur friend was released from the hospital not too long after the accident, thankfully. Luckily he was not injured too badly, mostly just some burns on his hands.
We are so thankful to everyone who has been helping with this!
