The quilt I've "designed" is a fusion of the Prism quilt by Fresh Lemons and Elizabeth Hartman's New Wave quilt. (Be sure to check both these quilts out - they are great!) I created this quick mock for myself in EQ7 to test out my idea, and created paper piecing templates for our group in the hope that this would increase accuracy.
I learned an important lesson with this quilt - if you are going to do paper pieced blocks for a quilt that need to line up with each other in a bee - mail the bee members the templates! Even if they all print with no scaling, there are slight variations among printers. It's worth the 44 cents each to ensure they're all from the same templates. :)
I quilted along the vertical lines to try to emphasize the new-wave aspect of it a bit. This recreated the design on the front on the backing in a kind of neat way.
The final quilt measures about 60" x 67.5", and was given to a single mom of four in our church who lost her husband. I can't even imagine being responsible for providing for and caring for four children all by myself - she must have the will of a superhero.
This is another scrappy quilt finished up this year, so I'm also linking this one up to Rachel's Festival of Scrappiness at Stitched in Color.

P.S. Linking up to sew & tell, too cute tuesday, fabric tuesday, made by me, nap time crafters, and {sew} modern monday.
The various shades of grey really make this quilt stunning! Great job...
ReplyDeleteWow this is really cool, love the pops of color in the middle of the diamonds!
ReplyDeleteI love this quilt!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much! ^_^

What a beautiful quilt! And no, I couldn't imagine raising my little ones and dealing with the loss of my husband either - praying for strength for that mother!
ReplyDeleteoh this turned out fantastic! Very cool! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry they didn't match up as well as you needed but I sure think the quilt turned out great!
ReplyDeleteIt came out beautifully, Kelsey! I especially love the quilted pattern from the back. So, I'm guessing this quilt is probably not made 60% from scrap since most of us probably used yardage for the gray parts, don't you think? Some others have not submitted quilts that they felt didn't meet the 60% requirement, so I think I should probably remove this one to be fair. Unless you disagree? Let me know if so. Sorry to be a stickler =)
ReplyDeleteWell, I always have tons of biggish solid scraps lying around from my quilts, so I just kind of guessed that some of the ladies would too, but to be honest, I didn't care much regarding the prizes part, I just thought since all the color came from scraps that it'd make a nice addition to the linky for people to look at for scrappy quilts. If you don't want it in there, than by all means, remove it. :)

It ended up working out just fine, I just had to get creative with a little trimming and block placement to account for it - but in the end I got them all to line up just fine. Just wanted to pass on the idea of mailing templates to others - would make it much easier in the future. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by!

Hi Kelsey. I just discovered your blog through Debbie at A quilters table. Lovely quilts and I am your newest follower : )
ReplyDeleteOh Kelsey it turned out beautifully! I've been so looking forward to seeing it all put together...you did beautiful work in making it all match up. That can be quite a challenge even when you make an entire quilt yourself over several different sewing sessions...I think mood/tiredness affect how we sew as well. I love how you chose to quilt it. I pray it blesses this single mom...and God blesses her as well :o)
ReplyDeleteI love all the greys in this quilt, with the pops of colour... it is just awesome! New Wave was a favourite pattern of mine when I first discovered flickr, I had kind of forgotten about it (shame on me!)
ReplyDeleteGreat tip about the templates... so true.
Yeah, I think New Wave is pretty awesome. I have some fabric upstairs to make one proper someday (rather than this fusion).
ReplyDeleteIt is so easy to forget things on flickr! It's why I tend to use flickr favorites to favorite just kind of everything I really like, but then pin the things I want to make sure to come back to to make some day to pinterest. :)
Thanks so much for coming by!
Kelsey

ReplyDeleteWow if that picture of the full quilt doesn't do it justice, I can only imagine how incredible it looks in person. That is a fabulous quilt, what a great design and color choices.
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful quilt!! I hope this brings some comfort to the recipient.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I love the echoing of the design in the quilting. Great job!
